We have always known that drinking water is good for us.  Water keeps us hydrated, improves skin health, and is great for kidney and bowel health. Then some people started wondering … how about adding something to our drinking water to make it even healthier?

Hence, the birth of detox water, which is essentially water infused with flavors of those extra ingredients, be they fruits, vegetables, herbs or any combination of them. Some of these popular detox water recipes claim that they help remove toxins from your body, gives you more energy and facilitates weight loss.

Hydrogen water, or the so-called miracle water, is another wellness buzzword. It’s believed that adding extra hydrogen molecules in water would help reduce inflammation and restore young-looking skin.

But are these health claims all true?

Detoxification

Drinking approximately 1.5 litres of regular water per day is enough to detox your body. Currently there is no evidence that adding extra fruits, vegetables or herbs to water would enhance its detoxification process.

Improving Energy Level

Being even just slightly dehydrated can remarkably affect energy and concentration levels. A study has shown that adults increasing their daily intake of regular water, not necessarily detox water, from 1.2 litres to 2.5 litres felt more energetic and happier.

Beneficial for Weight Loss

Water is a natural appetite suppressant and research has shown that water does help burn more calories. So for those who plan to shed some extra pounds, make sure you keep the water bottle handy!

All in all, detox water can help your body detoxify, keep you energetic, and aid weight loss. However, so can regular water. So if you are considering substituting regular water with detox water, the answer is simple -- just go with your personal preference!

Glowing skin

Molecular hydrogen can fight free radicals in our body, which would cause oxidative stress that can damage cells and contribute to aging. Nevertheless there’s no guarantee that hydrogen-rich water will be absorbed by your skin and work as antioxidants.

Anti-inflammatory

Oxidative stress can cause chronic inflammation. Studies show that hydrogen reduces inflammation thanks to its antioxidant content. However these studies are largely done on animals, not human beings.

Staying hydrated is the key to beautiful skin and a healthy body. Vegetables and fruits are also a good source of antioxidants which is more budget-friendly than hydrogen water. Again, it’s up to your personal choice to go for hydrogen water or regular ones.
