    Managing Childhood Eczema

    managing-childhood-eczema

Living with eczema can be difficult, especially when there are additional complications beyond skin discomfort. A study in the Hong Kong and wider APAC region in 2012, for instance, found that of over 1000 eczema sufferers below 16 years old, 47% had food allergies and 30% had respiratory illnesses such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.1 With eczema becoming increasingly common due to pollution and higher stress levels,1 it’s all the more imperative that we teach our children how to manage this ailment, especially with humid spring weather round the corner.

    Three ways to combat eczema

In Hong Kong, 30% of child eczema sufferers experience more than 20 flare-ups a year, interfering with both their mental and physical well-being. Here are three ways to treat and minimize flare-ups.2

    1. Avoid exposure to drying chemicals

These include alcohol wipes and harsher soaps. When in doubt, consult a dermatologist to identify gentle soaps, shower gels and shampoos that will not irritate the skin.

    2. Dress to stay cool

In Hong Kong’s muggy spring and summer climate, excessive sweating can cause frequent and more painful flare-ups. Breathable cotton or linen clothing will help keep the skin cool and ventilated, especially if it’s loose-fitting.

    3. Relax

Stress can lead to an overactive immune system, which causes rashes and blisters to develop as your immune system overreacts to external allergens. Make sure your children has time to relax, pursue their interests and wind down from busy academic schedules.

Living with eczema is hard, but by introducing these simple precautions to your children, they’ll be able to manage better, and live a more carefree lifestyle!
