Have a Healthy New Year!

If you work out regularly and have been seeing results, you might be dreading Lunar New Year because it seems inevitable to pack on a few extra kgs when family and relatives are practically shoving unhealthy foods down your throat. These foods may include sticky rice cakes, turnip cakes, crispy dumplings, and sesame balls, which carry 165kcal, 70kcal, 130kcal, and 250kcal per piece respectively.1

Don’t fret — especially not during such a jovial season! With a bit of modification, you can enjoy festive snacks without compromising your healthy lifestyle choices.

Minimizing sugar intake

  • When putting together snacks for the Tray of Togetherness — a Lunar New Year staple for every household, instead of filling it with chocolate or traditional sweets, try sugar-free candies or dried fruits like dried apricots or apples.2
  • Avoid soft drinks and alcohol. Know that for every can of soda or alcoholic drink that you stay away from, you’re saving yourself from 80-150 calories.Choose diet drinks if you must drink a soda.

Healthier cooking methods

There are many auspicious dishes that do not require deep-frying. For example, steamed whole fish — which signifies abundance, and boiled dumplings — which symbolize “wealth and treasure”.3

Remember to fill your Lunar New Year with foods that are more nutritious. If you are not in charged of cooking, do remind the chef of your family the below nutrient facts.2

  • Vegetables contain phytochemicals that protect cells from damage
  • Fish is good for the heart
  • Whole grains are rich in fibre
  • Lean meat and skinless poultry contain less fat

Remember, it’s ok to indulge a little bit as we welcome the Year of the Pig. Just do it in moderation and with modification!
