The overall target of the Hong Kong Blueprint for Sustainable Use of Resources 2013-2022 is to reduce solid waste by 40% on a per capita basis by 2022. To fulfill this target, the government is set to build a culture that encourages people to “use less and waste less of the Earth’s resources.”

As with all things in this day and age, there are apps and organizations that help you reuse and recycle household waste.

The Loops Hong Kong is one of them. For a monthly fee, users receive weekly door-to-door recycling collection services, and enjoy access to information on how to identify and reuse recyclable items.

Green Power introduced the very first carton recycling campaign in Hong Kong in 2016, in a bid to raise awareness of the recyclability of drink cartons. In July 2020, as part of this campaign, a one-year project involving cash reward began. Members of the public are encouraged to give cartons to frontline recycling workers, including scavengers and cleaners, who in turn earn HKD 0.05 per carton (or HKD 3.30 per kg) when they give the cartons to recyclers.

Launched by Go Green Hong Kong, ‘Waste-No-Mall’ is a weekend market event where anyone can bring along items that are no longer of use to them and leave those items for others to take. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Giving your unwanted items a new life is a wonderful way of reducing waste and saving the environment.  Who knows? It might even bring a smile on someone else’s face. Check out ‘Waste-No-Mall’ - you never know what you might find for yourself, or what joy you might bring into someone else’s life.

If you want to read up on recycling, Waste Reduction Website is your go-to site. Operated by the Environmental Protection Department, this is not just your usual where-to-chuck-what website, it provides information regarding waste management and eco-friendly products as well.

Let us observe the three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle, and show Mother Earth the love and kindness that she deserves today and everyday.
