Winter Workout: Sport Climbing

You’re done for the day at work. You have your running gear with you. But then you think, “It’s chilly today. Maybe I should skip the running. One day wouldn’t hurt, would it?” And so you leave your gear at work and off you go.

If that has happened to you, you’re not alone. People tend to deviate from their workout routine during winter. But your exercise plan doesn’t have to be so weather-dependent.

Is sport climbing safe?

Take sport climbing as an example. It’s a fun exercise, and can be done indoors. Sport climbing was perceived as a “dangerous” sport back in the 80s. Over time, people began to realize as long as safety measures are taken properly, it’s just like a PE class.1

Safety, indeed, is important in sport climbing. However, it doesn’t depend on just how careful you are. As Hong Kong Mountaineering Union training officer Annie Wong would tell you, your belayer plays a pivotal role too.1

Wong once did sport climbing without a belayer and so when she fell, she didn’t have someone to manage her fall which put her through three surgeries. "Therefore, one must remember all precautions before playing," Wong stressed.1

Preparation

Sport climbing is appropriate for people of all ages and doesn’t involve special clothing.

Benefits

It improves hand-foot coordination and is great for team cohesion. What’s more, it can be done all year round, regardless of the weather.1

For those who are afraid of the cold, sport climbing may be just what you need to beat the winter workout blues!
