【Swollen Feet or Legs】Are swollen feet or legs a warning sign? Let’s explore the causes and potential health risks

    causes-and-health-risks-of-leg-edema

Swollen feet or legs are a relatively common condition that occurs when the amount of fluid in the tissues exceeds the lymphatic system’s capacity to remove it. Not only can swollen feet be uncomfortable, but they can also be an early warning sign of underlying health issues. Let’s explore the causes and potential health risks associated with swollen feet or legs.

There are numerous reasons why your feet might swell. Physiologically, the following factors are worth noting:

    • Unbalanced Diet

Consuming too few green vegetables or excessive amounts of salty foods can contribute to swollen feet or legs.
    • Prolonged Sitting or Standing

Both sitting and standing for too long can hinder blood circulation, causing fluid to accumulate in the tissues and leading to swelling.
    • Menstrual Cycle

Hormonal fluctuations during a menstrual cycle can cause feet or legs to swell.

Many people wonder if swollen feet or legs could be a sign of a more serious health condition. “Swollen feet or legs are one of the five major signs of kidney disease, especially when accompanied by swelling in the eyelids, face, and other limbs. This often leads people to suspect kidney problems. Proteinuria can lead to a decrease in blood albumin levels, causing fluid retention. Impaired kidney function can also cause fluid and salt retention, resulting in swelling,” an obstetrician-gynecologist in Taiwan explained. Beyond kidney issues, conditions affecting the heart, liver, or other organs, as well as medications like blood pressure drugs and steroids, can also cause swollen feet or legs.

For example, heart disease can lead to poor blood circulation, while liver cirrhosis can cause protein deficiency or blockages that cause fluid to accumulate in the lower extremities. These underlying health conditions may not only cause swollen feet or legs but can also affect other parts of the body and lead to complications. If you experience frequent swelling or notice additional symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention to rule out any underlying diseases.

    • Soak Your Feet Before Bed

Soaking your feet in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes can improve blood circulation.
    • Elevate Your Legs

While sitting, elevate your feet and straighten your toes. Then, move your feet up and down to help excess fluid flow back to the upper body.
    • Enjoy a Foot Massage

A simple foot and calf massage can help improve blood flow.
    • Maintain a Balanced Diet

Consume plenty of protein and fiber, and limit your intake of high-fat, high-cholesterol, and high-sodium foods.
    • Wear Compression Stockings

Compression bandages or stockings can help reduce swelling.

While swollen feet or legs are common, they should not be ignored. They can be an early warning sign of underlying health issues. Given the many potential causes, it is essential to seek medical advice when the swelling gets severe.
