    Rediscover an Active Lifestyle

    Rediscover_an_Active_Lifestyle

What inspires people to get back in shape? For some, it’s the thrill of learning a new sport. For others, it’s the sight of their old photos, capturing slimmer, healthier and happier memories, and inspiring them to recapture former glories. And for many of us, it’s the coming of a New Year, signalling a chance to start on a clean slate and get our lives, fitness, and figures back on track.

We asked three people to share their stories of how they rediscovered an active lifestyle after a life-changing experience prompted them to reconsider their daily routine, and renewed their motivation to stay fit and healthy.

    After an Injury

Paul’s twice-weekly basketball game was once the highlight of his week, but knee pain put an end to that particular hobby. Inspired by his doctor’s advice, Paul decided to trade his basketball shorts for board shorts and take up swimming.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions he’d ever made. Swimming might have been low-impact where Paul’s fragile knee joints were concerned, but it certainly had a high impact when it came to improving his physical and mental health. Weekly outdoor swim sessions – even in the bracing winter months, with the help of a wetsuit - helped him clear his mind, gain focus and perseverance, and get a superb cardiovascular workout!

    Staying motivated like Paul –

    • Switch up your workout every now and then to keep your body guessing – this keeps you from getting bored and yields better results.
    • Remember that exercising has mental and emotional benefits as well as physical ones – it’s a great opportunity to relax and let your mind wander.
    • Injury doesn’t mean staying inactive – consult your doctor and find out what exercises you can perform safely!

    After Having a Baby

Emily had to give up her cycling hobby when she entered late-stage pregnancy, and after her Caesarean birth her doctor advised her to take it easy. But Emily figured that both her and the baby could use some fresh air, and started taking daily 30-minute walks with her stroller in tow.

To keep things interesting, Emily takes a different route every day. She discovered hidden gems all over her neighborhood, from gorgeous little parks to charming vintage stores. And what’s more, sleep comes so much easier after a vigorous stroll.

    Staying Motivated like Emily –

    • Remember that regular exercise is essential for restful sleep.
    • If you’re a parent with young children, involving your kids in your exercise routine ensures you can keep an eye on them while staying fit – who knows, their youthful energy might even inspire you to work out more!
    • Consult your doctor after giving birth to find out what level of physical activity is safe for you.

    After Reaching a Goal

Katy trained night and day to complete a marathon. She stuck to her punishing workout schedule because she craved the thrill of finishing the race – but when she finished the marathon, her motivation disappeared and she gradually fell out of love with running.

Thankfully, Katy rediscovered her love of running when she moved into a new neighborhood and discovered a local running club. Her new friends’ enthusiasm for running was infectious, and it reminded her why she got into the sport in the first place. It wasn’t long before she started training and competing again, and her race results are getting better every time.

    Staying Motivated like Katy –

    • Sign up for a fitness class or club to meet like-minded friends and stay motivated.
    • Exercising with other people can keep you from getting complacent and inspire you to push your limits.

Busy family and work schedules can make it difficult to find time for exercise. But if you find a sport you like and keep your motivation going strong, an active lifestyle is definitely within your reach!
