Unlike a lot of other diseases, diabetes is not so much about how “serious” the disease is. Rather, it is more about how well a patient can control their blood sugar levels in order to reduce the risk of complications. Watch our interview with Ms. Kammie Yu, Founder/Director of Angel of Diabetic to find out more.
Types
There are four common types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes
- Prediabetes
- Gestational diabetes
What Causes Diabetes?
Lifestyle factors are the main causes of diabetes. For example, a chronically poor diet, lack of exercise, and stress are some of the main culprits. Other causes include old age, overweight, and genes. Those who have suffered from gestational diabetes before are more susceptible to diabetes as well.
How to Prevent Diabetes?
There are two ways through which one can avoid getting diabetes: lifestyle and dietary.
How to Build A Healthy Lifestyle to Avoid Diabetes?
- Having a stable, healthy lifestyle routine would help prevent diabetes
- Exercising often and staying active can help avoid the disease
How to Control Your Diet?
- Steer away from sauces as much as possible
- Limit the intake of foods that are high in sugar content
- Skip sugary drinks
- Ensure there is adequate dietary fiber in daily meals
Complications of Diabetes
Complications of diabetes include diabetic foot disorders, diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease), diabetic retinopathy (eye disease), and cardiovascular disease. These complications do not only affect quality of life, but the medical expenses that they may incur could be astronomical.
Taking steps to prevent diabetes is smart. Taking precautionary steps like taking out an insurance policy with diabetic coverage in case life throws you a curve ball is equally smart.
