More than 70% of senior residents in Hong Kong have at least one chronic health condition. Coping with chronic illnesses can have a detrimental impact on the quality of life, not just for the patients, but for their caregivers as well.

Chronic illness and stress

Losing physical or mental wellness and independence can be a great cause of stress. Patients often worry about their health condition, treatment and finances. Meanwhile, caregivers also have a challenging role as they have to take care of their patients’ needs, while compromising their own social life.

Without proper management, things could spiral down quickly, leading to deteriorating physical and mental health, depression or even suicide. Here are some tips on how to cope with chronic conditions.

1. Understanding your condition

Learn about your condition, as well as how to manage it. This would give you a sense of control over your condition and help your caregiver do their job as well.

2. Practise positive thinking

Thinking positively encourages adherence to treatment regime and appropriate lifestyle changes. Continuous participation in daily activities also helps improve self worth and reduces reliance on your caregiver.

3. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

This can help you feel as best as you can with your condition. Eat and sleep well. Maintain your social life. Exercise regularly — you can invite your friends to exercise with you and turn it into a social event!

Living with a chronic condition is hard, but it can be managed. Remember, it is always okay to seek or accept help.
