Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Prevention

    hand-foot-and-mouth-disease-prevention

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common disease in children that usually peaks from May to July in Hong Kong.1 Let us take a look at how we can combat HFMD with our little ones.

HFMD is caused by enteroviruses, such as coxsackieviruses and enterovirus 71.2 These viruses can spread through contact with an infected person’s saliva, mucus or stool, or any contaminated objects.

The incubation period for HFMD is three to seven days. When the symptoms do occur, they usually begin with a fever and sore throat. Blisters and rashes show up usually one or two days after the fever begins.2

There is no vaccine to protect against the viruses that cause HFMD. Observing good hygiene is the best defense.3

    1. Wash hands with soap and water frequently, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Use alcohol-based hand rub if soap and water are unavailable
    2. Clean and disinfect touched surfaces including toys frequently with 1:99 diluted household bleach
    3. Do not share food, drinks, towels and personal items with others
    4. Avoid group activities during an HFMD outbreak

There are ways to ease symptoms at home. Give your child plenty of water to help them stay hydrated, and use mouthwash to numb pain in the mouth. HFMD mostly runs its course in seven to ten days. But if symptoms do not improve, call your doctor immediately. Caring for a sick child can be exhausting. But with your love and intensive care, they will recover in no time.
