Having asthma could be challenging.  Many asthma sufferers simply dismiss the idea of exercising, thinking it would pose a great danger to their lives.  But just like every other person, asthma patients need physical training to maintain health and wellness. In fact, getting your heart and lungs fit can help improve asthma symptoms and reduce breathlessness. Not to mention the “happy hormones” released during exercise can reduce stress and in turn prevent asthma attacks. So, let’s have a look at some wonderful physical training for asthma sufferers in particular.

Solo cardio exercises for asthmatics:

  • Walking
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Swimming

A study by Acadia University, Canada found that adults who conducted aerobic exercises 3 times a week for 12 weeks have shown improvement in asthma control and fitness levels.

Team sports that involve short bursts of intensive exercise for asthmatics:

  • Volleyball
  • Gymnastics
  • Baseball
  • Wrestling
  1. Take your reliever inhaler with you at all times. If you start coughing, wheezing and become unusually breathless even after you stop exercising, take your reliever inhaler.
  2. If you work out with other people, let them know you suffer from asthma and what they should do if you have an attack.
  3. Always perform your warming-up and cooling-down routines properly.
  4. During cold days, consider switching to indoor activities instead, or cover your mouth and nose with a scarf as cold weather can trigger asthmatic symptoms. Here’s a great winter workout for your consideration.
  5. Be honest with yourself. If you do not feel well, do not force yourself.  Forcing yourself would only slow down recovery and defeat the whole purpose of exercising.

Remember, even if you suffer from asthma, exercise DOES help. You CAN and SHOULD maintain a normal and healthy lifestyle just as usual. Don’t let asthma hold you back.  Enjoy getting and staying fit with asthma!
