"Keto" is fast being one of the most popular diets today. Keto, full in Ketogenic, is an extremely high-fat and low-carb diet that causes the body to break down stored fat into ketone bodies as the main source of energy, instead of blood sugar from carbohydrates.
What is good about it?
This diet claims to lead to weight loss, reduced risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.1 Certain analysis highlights its ability to deliver satisfactory results on weight-loss over a short period of time. However, University researchers say there are risks instead of benefits in the long run.2
Risks
Doctors have expressed concerns regarding a shortened lifespan due to a higher intake of animal-based proteins and saturated fats. In such a restrictive diet, eggs, cheese, beef, pork, lamb, chicken and even processed meat dominate. To be specific, excess consumption has been proven to correlate with the increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.
That being said, opting for plant-based proteins and fats will reduce the risk. Nevertheless, like all specific diets, processes behind Keto diet is highly individualized, meaning results can vary among different people, not to mention it is really hard to follow over the long run.
